Calcium Nitrate

Nitrate Applications for Hydrogen Sulfide Control

Nitrates offer reliable, long-lasting hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) control in gravity and force mains. They work in two key ways to manage odor:

  • Curative Applications: Target existing odors by providing oxygen that transforms dissolved sulfide into sulfate. This process typically requires a 2-3 hour retention time and dosage of 1-3 gallons of calcium nitrate per pound of H₂S.
  • Preventative Applications: Prevents odor formation by conditioning the biofilm in the sewer system to use nitrate instead of sulfate, reducing the formation of H₂S. Preventative treatments are effective for retention times up to 3 hours, with typical doses ranging from 2-8 gallons per pound of H₂S.

Each gallon provides 3.5 lbs of nitrate-oxygen, making it a proven solution for both immediate and ongoing odor control needs.

municipal wastewater collection basin

Wastewater collection systems are complex structures with dynamic hydraulics. Consequently, more than one control mechanism is often at work, and several factors should be considered in designing a cost-effective control program.

Our experts have been solving complex wastewater collection system issues for over 25 years. Our Rapid Response program has been extremely successful at effectively and inexpensively remediating odor and corrosion issues in municipal infrastructure.
