A specialty chemical manufacturer experienced discharge violations due to ineffective treatment processes. These violations included high phenols and bio-toxicity levels. To solve this, the manufacturer needed to pre-treat a wastewater stream, aiming to reduce phenols by 90% before combining it with higher-flow waste streams.
USP Technologies designed a Fenton’s treatment program to tackle this challenge. In this program, USP added an iron catalyst to the wastewater stream through an in-line static mixer. Then, we injected hydrogen peroxide into the first cell of a baffled reaction vessel. This baffling system prevents short-circuiting and ensures the mixture has enough time to react. The dosing modules for both hydrogen peroxide and the iron catalyst are interlocked with the wastewater pumps, which ensures the chemical feed stops if there is an interruption in wastewater flow.
USP worked closely with a top environmental consulting firm and the manufacturer. Together, they conducted lab-scale treatability tests and designed a full-scale process. USP also completed a 6-month demonstration of the technology, which helped optimize chemical dosing requirements.
Today, USP supplies the iron catalyst, hydrogen peroxide, and complete storage and dosing systems for this Fenton’s process. This support includes equipment maintenance, remote tank monitoring, inventory management, and applications services. Now, this Fenton’s process is a permanent part of the facility’s wastewater treatment. It consistently removes over 90% of phenols, eliminates bio-toxicity violations, and has resolved related public relations issues.
