Optimizing H2S Control in Agricultural Digesters

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in Agricultural Digesters

Agricultural anaerobic digesters convert organic material – manure, food waste, agricultural byproducts, etc. – into valuable biogas. This biological process inherently generates hydrogen sulfide (H2S), a corrosive, toxic gas that threatens operational efficiency, asset longevity, and biogas output.

Left unmanaged, H2S degrades biogas quality, accelerates equipment corrosion, and increases maintenance costs, which can prevent operators from meeting pipeline injection or RNG specifications. In a market where gas quality and yield directly impact revenue, H2S control is paramount.

Hydrogen Sulfide Impact on Digester Operations

Reduced BTU content & gas quality

H2S dilutes the methane concentration in biogas, directly lowering its energy value and making it harder to meet the quality thresholds required for productive use or sale.

Accelerated corrosion of infrastructure

Even at low concentrations, H2S is highly corrosive to pipes, engines, compressors, and other metal components. Exposure can lead to premature equipment failure and costly unplanned repairs and maintenance.

Increased gas polishing costs (scrubbers, media, etc.)

When H2S levels are left unmanaged upstream in the process, downstream scrubbers and filtration media may become overloaded leading to inefficiency or even additional repairs and replacement, driving up operating expenses.

Pipeline injection and RNG specification failures

Renewable natural gas (RNG) pipelines and markets have strict H2S concentration limits and exceeding these limits can result in rejected loads, penalties, or temporary shutdown of operations.

Regulatory and safety compliance

H2S is a regulated toxic gas with strict occupational exposure limits, and failure to control H2S effectively can result in regulatory violations, environmental citations, and serious safety risks for operators on-site.
